The British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is in India – his first visit to the country since taking office in 2024. Significantly, the visit comes in the backdrop of the historic Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement signed between India and the United Kingdom in July this year – a milestone witnessed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Keir Starmer in person. The British Prime Minister is accompanied by a high-powered delegation of 125 members, including leading CEOs, entrepreneurs, university vice-chancellors, and cultural figures. The delegation arrived in Mumbai to a warm reception. Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Starmer expressed hope for the early implementation of the trade pact, describing it as a launchpad for future economic cooperation. He highlighted that with India poised to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2028, and trade between the two countries set to become quicker and cheaper, the opportunities for growth are unparalleled. Analysts estimate that the India–UK trade agreement could increase bilateral trade by nearly £25.5 billion (about $34 billion) by 2040, with the potential for even greater expansion in the years ahead.
