As one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies, India’s growth numbers consistently make headlines. Whether it is the GDP projections, the key drivers of growth, or the broader optimism around India’s economic trajectory – we hear and read about them almost every day. But behind the news and the numbers lies a fundamental question – How well do they actually capture the reality of today’s economy? And that question becomes even more relevant when we consider how much India has changed and transformed over the past decade. From the rapid rise of digital platforms and gig work, to greater formalisation through GST, to shifting consumption patterns and evolving investment behaviour – the structure of the Indian economy today is very different from what it was a decade ago. It is in this context that the revision of the GDP base year – from 2011–12 to 2022–23 – becomes particularly significant. The revised series, which was released earlier this year by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, brings with it improvements in data sources, updated classifications, and important method-ological refinements aligned with global standards. But this is not just a technical exercise. It has a direct bearing on how we read the growth numbers, how the policies are shaped, and how India’s economic story is understood – both domestically and globally. So today, in Perspective, we revisit this important exercise. We explore questions like: Does the new GDP series give us a clearer and more complete picture of the economy? And what does it mean for the way we interpret India’s growth going forward?
