Perspective: INDIA AWAITS THE MONSOON | 22 June, 2026

The monsoon is far more than a weather event for India. It is the pulse of the nation’s economy, agriculture, water security and rural livelihoods. Every year, millions of farmers, businesses and households look to the skies, waiting for the rains that sustain crops, replenish reservoirs, recharge groundwater and power economic activity. India experiences two monsoon systems every year—the Southwest Monsoon and the Northeast Monsoon. Of these, the Southwest Monsoon, which arrives between June and September, accounts for nearly three-fourths of the country’s annual rainfall and remains the backbone of India’s agricultural economy. For generations, the monsoon has been one of the most dependable events in India’s calendar. It arrives from the south, advances steadily across the subcontinent and brings relief from the scorching summer heat. But this year, the story has been different. After making an onset over Kerala and advancing rapidly across parts of the country, the monsoon appears to have lost momentum in mid-June. According to the India Meteorological Department, rainfall during the month has remained significantly below normal, leaving large parts of central, northern and peninsular India facing rainfall deficits. The slowdown has raised concerns among farmers, policymakers and weather experts alike. Experts attribute this temporary pause to a combination of meteorological factors, including weak monsoon circulation, adverse upper-air conditions and the influence of large-scale climate patterns. While forecasters expect the monsoon to regain strength towards the end of June, uncertainty remains over how quickly the rainfall deficit can be bridged. So Is this just a brief interruption in the monsoon’s progress, or an indication of changing climate realities and their impact on India?
