Perspective: EXPANDING INDIA-KOREA TIES | 21 April, 2026

Today, we focus to the expanding India–Korea partnership – a relationship that is now moving towards a more ambitious and future-oriented phase. The President of the Republic of Korea, Lee Jae Myung, concluded his three-day State Visit to India from April 19 to 21. Notably, this is his first visit to the country, and it comes within a year of him assuming office. The President was accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Ministers, senior officials and leading CEOs from major Korean companies — reflecting the strong economic and technological dimension of this engagement. The visit delivered a wide range of tangible outcomes, with multiple MoUs and agreements signed across key sectors. The emphasis has been clear – to place the partnership on a stronger footing, with a forward-looking and strategic agenda. In fact, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described this moment as a transition — from a trusted partnership to a futuristic partnership. In addition, as many as 15 MoUs and frameworks have been signed — spanning ports, industrial cooperation, digital technology, science and innovation, climate action, and trade. Importantly, both sides have also agreed to resume negotiations to upgrade the existing economic partnership agreement. There are also new institutional mechanisms being put in place — including the launch of an Economic Security Dialogue, a Distinguished Visitors Programme, and a dedicated dialogue on global issues such as climate change, the Arctic, and maritime cooperation. Significantly, Korea has joined key India-led initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative, while India will join the Global Green Growth Institute. And in a symbolic yet meaningful step, both nations will commemorate 2028–29 as the Year of India–Republic of Korea Friendship. So what do these developments mean for the future of India–Korea ties? How significant is this shift towards a more strategic and technology-driven partnership? And what opportunities lie ahead?
