Across the world today, healthcare is becoming more expensive, waiting periods are getting longer, and more people are looking beyond just treatment towards preventive and holistic wellness. And that shift is changing the way the world looks at healthcare travel. Medical tourism is now a fast-growing global industry, expected to reach nearly 286 billion dollars by 2030. And increasingly, India is becoming an important part of that story. Every year, lakhs of people are travelling to India as medical tourists. In 2025 alone, more than five lakh foreign nationals came to India specifically for medical treatment. From cardiac surgeries and cancer care to organ transplants, fertility treatment and orthopaedic procedures India today is serving patients from across Asia, Africa and beyond. At the same time, India’s traditional wellness systems are also drawing global attention. Yoga, Ayurveda and other AYUSH practices are now becoming an important part of the country’s larger wellness tourism story. What is helping India emerge as a global healing destination? Is it affordability? Is it trust in Indian doctors and hospitals? Or is it India’s unique ability to combine modern medicine with holistic wellness traditions? And as the government pushes initiatives like “Heal in India”, e-medical visas, AYUSH visas and new medical hubs, what could this mean for India’s economy, healthcare sector and global image?
