Perspective: UN Hails India’s Child Mortality Decline | 20 March, 2026

India is earning global recognition for a major public health achievement. The latest United Nations Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation Report 2025 has hailed India’s sharp progress in reducing child mortality, with neonatal deaths and under-five mortality seeing a steep decline over the past three decades. The report says: Over the past two decades, India has played a pivotal role in efforts to reduce child mortality in the South Asia region, which has witnessed a 76 per cent decline in under-five deaths since 1990 and 68 per cent fall since 2000.
