Five years ago, India gave a fresh momentum to one of its oldest and most enduring institutions – the cooperative movement – with the creation of the Ministry of Cooperation. Today, as the Ministry celebrates its 5th Foundation Day, it marks five years of reforms, expansion and transformation across the cooperative sector. In these five years, cooperatives have embraced technology, expanded their reach and diversified their role. From the digitisation of Primary Agricultural Credit Societies… to strengthening dairy, fisheries and urban cooperative banking… from expanding rural infrastructure to creating new national cooperative institutions… the journey has been guided by the vision of ‘Sahkar Se Samriddhi.’The scale of this transformation is reflected in the numbers. More than 150 major initiatives have been launched since the Ministry was established, modernising traditional cooperative institutions while opening new avenues for growth and diversification.Today, India has one of the world’s largest cooperative ecosystems, with 8.5 lakh registered cooperative societies spanning nearly every sector of the economy and reaching 98 percent of rural India. More than 63,000 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies have been digitised with ERP software available in 14 languages. Meanwhile, Bharat Taxi is taking the cooperative model into urban mobility, with 6.37 lakh registered drivers and over 35 lakh registered customers. As India moves towards the vision of Viksit Bharat, the cooperative sector is emerging as a powerful engine of inclusive growth – empowering farmers, women, youth and rural communities. So, what has defined this remarkable five-year journey? Which reforms have made the biggest difference on the ground? And what is the next chapter for India’s cooperative movement?
