India is celebrating GST Day 2026, marking nine years since the rollout of the Goods and Services Tax—one of the most significant economic reforms in the country’s history. Introduced on 1st July 2017, GST replaced a complex web of Central and State indirect taxes with a unified tax regime, giving shape to the vision of “One Nation, One Tax.” Over the past nine years, GST has transformed India’s indirect tax landscape by promoting digitalisation, improving compliance, simplifying tax administration and strengthening cooperative federalism through closer Centre-State coordination. It has helped create a common national market, reinforced the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’, and contributed to greater transparency and ease of doing business. The GST 2.0 reforms, introduced in 2025, have taken this transformation a step further by rationalising tax rates, reducing compliance burdens and extending greater benefits to consumers, businesses, MSMEs, exporters, farmers and several key sectors of the economy. So, on the programme today, we will examine: How has GST reshaped India’s indirect tax system? What has been achieved over the past nine years, what challenges remain, and what lies ahead in the next phase of tax reforms?
