For centuries, the oceans have connected India to the world. They have connected our shores to distant civilizations, powered trade and commerce, sustained millions of livelihoods, and served as gateways to cultural exchange and economic prosperity. Today, their importance has only grown. Oceans are at the heart of some of the world’s most pressing challenges and opportunities – from climate change and biodiversity conservation to food security, energy resources and sustainable economic growth. As the world observes World Oceans Day 2026, the focus is on recognising the immense value of our oceans and reinforcing our collective responsibility to protect them for future generations. For India, this is particularly significant. Over the past decade, the country has fundamentally transformed its approach towards the oceans. From strengthening marine conservation and enhancing coastal resilience to advancing ocean science and embracing the Blue Economy as a key pillar of growth, India has sought to balance environmental stewardship with economic opportunity. Initiatives such as the Deep Ocean Mission, expanded ocean observation and forecasting systems, sustainable fisheries management, greener ports and shipping practices, and a renewed focus on the Blue Economy reflect a broader vision – one that views the oceans not merely as natural resources, but as strategic assets that can drive sustainable development and support the vision of Viksit Bharat. At the same time, the challenge remains clear: How do we conserve marine ecosystems while harnessing the immense economic potential of our oceans? What progress has India made in recent years? And what should be the roadmap for the decades ahead?
