Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned home on Wednesday, wrapping up his two-day State visit to Bhutan, marking yet another milestone in the special relationship between the two neighbours a partnership built on shared values, cultural affinity, and a common vision for progress and prosperity.The Prime Minister was in Bhutan from the 11th to the 12th of November, at the invitation of the King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. During the visit, Prime Minister Modi joined the people of Bhutan in celebrating the 70th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo at Changlimithang on November 11th, as the Guest of Honour. The Prime Minister also participated in the Global Peace Prayer Festival in Thimphu. The King of Bhutan appreciated the presence of the sacred Piprahwa Relics of Lord Buddha from India, brought for public veneration during the Festival. His Majesty also conveyed heartfelt condolences on the tragic loss of lives in the recent explosion in Delhi. Bilateral discussions between the two sides covered key areas of cooperation, along with regional and global issues of mutual interest. Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s steadfast support to Bhutan’s 13th Five Year Plan, including the Economic Stimulus Programme reiterating India’s commitment to partner with Bhutan in achieving its development priorities and promoting sustainable growth across sectors. Prime Minister Modi and the King of Bhutan jointly inaugurated the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project on November 11th a shining example of the enduring friendship and exemplary cooperation between the two nations in the field of hydropower. The leaders also welcomed the resumption of work on the main dam structure of the 1200 MW Punatsangchhu-I project, which, upon completion, will be the largest jointly developed hydropower project between India and Bhutan. They further welcomed the consecration of the Royal Bhutan Temple in Rajgir and India’s decision to grant land in Varanasi for the construction of a Bhutanese temple and guest house. Prime Minister Modi also announced the establishment of an Immigration Check Post at Hatisar in Assam to facilitate smooth movement of investors and visitors to Gelephu, along with a ₹4,000 crore Line of Credit to support Bhutan’s energy sector. We’ll now take a closer look at the significance of these announcements and MoUs, and more importantly, how this visit by Prime Minister Modi further reaffirms India’s enduring partnership and shared vision with Bhutan across all levels.
