World leaders gathered in Johannesburg over the weekend for the G20 Leaders’ Summit, hosted by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed key sessions on ‘Inclusive and sustainable economic growth leaving no one behind’, ‘A Resilient World- G20 Contribution to Disaster Risk Reduction; Climate Change; Just Energy Transition; Food Systems’ and ‘A Fair and a Just Future for All – Critical Minerals; Decent Work; Artificial Intelligence’. During the sessions, the Prime Minister elaborated India’s approach to growth, development and well-being for all, and proposed six ideas for the G20 to consider. At the session on ‘A Fair and a Just Future for All – Critical Minerals; Decent Work; Artificial Intelligence’, the Prime Minister called for a fundamental change in the way critical technologies are promoted. He asserted that technology applications must be ‘human-centric’ rather than ‘finance-centric’, ‘global’ rather than ‘national’, and based on ‘open source’ rather than ‘exclusive models’. The Prime Minister once again used the platform to seek greater voice for the Global South in global governance structures.
