On Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the launch
of the National Deep Water Exploration Mission – a bold step to unlock
oil and gas reserves hidden beneath the sea, and to push India closer
to energy self-reliance.
Calling it ‘Samudra Manthan’, the Prime Minister said the mission will
be executed in mission mode – promising breakthroughs in science,
technology, and engineering.
This builds on India’s Deep Ocean Mission, launched in 2021 by the
Ministry of Earth Sciences – with an outlay of over ₹4,000 crore to
sustainably explore and harness the wealth of the deep seas.
From the Samudrayaan submersible project, to cutting-edge research on
marine biodiversity, this initiative lies at the heart of India’s Blue
Economy.
With 7,500 kilometres of coastline, nine coastal states, and more than
1,300 islands, India’s unique geography gives it a natural advantage.
By venturing into the depths of the ocean, India is not just unlocking
vast reserves of minerals, biodiversity, and energy, but also
positioning itself among the few nations with advanced deep-sea
exploration technology, as enshrined in Prime Minister’s vision of
‘Samudra Manthan’.
So how does ‘Samudra Manthan’ promise to transform India’s future – from resources to research, from sustainability to strategy?
