India and the European Union have reaffirmed their shared ambition to conclude negotiations on the long-awaited Free Trade Agreement by the end of this year. At the 11th India–EU Foreign Policy and Security Consultations and the 6th Strategic Partnership Review Meeting held recently in Brussels, both sides indicated that the FTA could be formally sealed at the India–EU Summit scheduled to take place in late January. According to reports, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa are expected to be the chief guests at India’s Republic Day celebrations on January 26. The following day, January 27, the India–EU Summit is likely to be held, where both sides are eyeing major deliver-ables including the Free Trade Agreement, a Security and Defence Partnership, and a Security Information Agreement. As India and the EU prepare for a Summit that could shape the next phase of their strategic partnership, we analyse with experts how far negotiations on the FTA have progressed, where the key sticking points remain especially over steel, automobiles, and the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, the carbon tax on certain goods, and how both sides can bridge their differences within the current timeline.
