India’s rapidly advancing bioeconomy sector is projected to reach 300 billion dollars by 2030, according to a recent NITI Aayog report. The report, “Reimagining Agriculture: A Roadmap for Frontier Technology Led Transformation,” underlines that a robust agricultural system is fundamental to national sovereignty and food security. It places agricultural transformation at the core of India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047, and lays out a strategy to harness frontier technologies from climate-resilient seeds and precision agriculture to digital twins, agentic AI, and advanced mechanisation to boost productivity, sustainability, and farmer incomes across India’s diverse agri landscape. Over the past decade, India has also emerged as one of the fastest-growing bioeconomies in the world. From just 10 billion dollars in 2014, the sector has expanded to 165.7 billion dollars in 2024, contributing 4.25 percent to the national GDP of 3.89 trillion dollars. With an ambitious target of 300 billion dollars by 2030 and a long-term projection of up to 2.7 trillion dollars by 2050 India is positioning itself to become a global bioeconomy powerhouse. So how are we moving towards the 2030 target? What does the roadmap look like? And what have been the key enablers that helped India become one of the world’s fastest-growing bioeconomies?
