On the show today, we focus on the growing unrest in Iran, triggered by the country’s worsening economic situation and now spreading across several districts. According to news reports, more than a dozen lives have been lost over the past week as protests escalated into violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces. What began as public anger over soaring inflation and a sharp devaluation of the national currency has gradually taken on a political dimension, with sections of protesters raising political demands, including calls for a return to monarchy. As the demonstrations widen, Iranian authorities have acknowledged the depth of the economic crisis and have promised dialogue with the protesters. However, tensions have sharpened following U.S. President Donald Trump’s warning that Washington could come to the rescue of protesters in the event of a crackdown. In response, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has cautioned that Iran “will not yield to the enemy.” In this programme, we will take a closer look at Iran’s deepening economic turmoil, the public anger it has fuelled, and how economic distress has spiralled into widespread protests across multiple cities.
