New Delhi has become the nerve centre of a crucial global conversation this week, as policymakers, technologists, industry leaders and civil society voices gather for the India AI Impact Summit – the first global AI summit of its kind to be hosted in the Global South. This is not just another technology conference. It is an attempt to reframe the global AI debate. Around the world, the AI conversation often revolves around existential risk, job disruption, and geopolitical competition. Important concerns, yes…But here in India, the focus has shifted – and perhaps in a more urgent direction. So instead of asking, How powerful can AI become and will AI take away jobs?. India is asking, Who does AI serve?, Instead of concentrating only on safety frameworks or competitive advantage, the discussion here is focused on the politics of impact. Who benefits?, Who is left out?, Who sets the rules?, And how do we ensure that AI becomes a force for public good — not just a privilege born of technological advancement?, From healthcare to agriculture…From education to governance…From climate action to financial inclusion…The message emerging from the India AI Impact Summit is clear: Artificial Intelligence must be democratized. It cannot remain the preserve of a few corporations or a handful of countries. It must be accessible. Accountable. Inclusive. Designed for citizens. India’s digital public infrastructure has already shown how technology can operate at mass scale. Now, the ambition is even bigger: to move from digital inclusion to AI inclusion. So, what does Democratization of AI mean? Is it only about access to data? Or Affordable computing power?, Open models? Or AI in local languages?, Or is it about something deeper – Participatory governance and giving citizens a voice in shaping the technology that will shape their futures?, To explore some of these aspects, we’re joined by two distinguished experts who have been part of key sessions at the India AI Impact Summit. They’ve engaged with global and domestic stakeholders at the summit.
