As the United Nations marks its 80th year, questions about its relevance and effectiveness have never been more pressing. At a high-level meeting of like-minded Global South nations on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar called for greater solidarity among developing countries to push collectively for reforms to the UN and other global institutions. Citing a series of global shocks – from the pandemic to conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, to climate change and trade uncertainties – Dr. Jaishankar underlined the urgency of strengthening multilateralism, while lamenting the disappointing prospects currently facing the Global South. India has long been a leading advocate for a more representative international order, backing an expanded UN Security Council alongside Germany, Japan and Brazil, as well as broad segments of the Global South. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has also voiced support for reforms to better reflect the realities of 2025 and beyond. Today, we take a closer look at the United Nations at 80 – its relevance in tackling contemporary challenges, its limitations, and the roadblocks to meaningful reform.
