3rd December marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This year, the World Health Organisation is highlighting a crucial issue: how inclusive and equitable financing can transform the lives, health and well-being of persons with disabilities, their families, and society at large. There are 1.3 billion persons with disabilities worldwide meaning that the idea of health for all is incomplete unless it fully recognises their needs. Yet, for many, health care still remains out of reach. When financing systems overlook disability, it leads to harsh realities – catastrophic out-of-pocket costs for essential services, lack of coverage for treatments, assistive devices, and therapies, which can push families into cycles of poverty and exclusion. That’s why the WHO is urging governments across the world to embed disability inclusion at the heart of health financing and adopt “progressive universalism” ensuring that those with the greatest needs are not left behind. In India, with around 2.7 crore persons with disabilities, a strong and determined disability rights movement is gaining momentum. The government’s focus on accessibility, empowerment and self-reliance is shaping a new narrative – one that ensures opportunities, dignity and agency for every individual. On the show today, we take a closer look at the key initiatives, policies and schemes that are driving inclusion in India – from expanding accessibility and education to livelihoods, healthcare and social security. We also explore how these efforts are empowering persons with disabilities, where the gaps still remain, and what more needs to be done to build a society where every person can live, work and thrive with dignity.
