Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is set to present her record ninth consecutive Union Budget this Sunday, the 1st of February. The tone has already been set by the Economic Survey 2025–26, which projects India’s economy to grow between 6.8 and 7.2 percent in FY27, with potential growth estimated at around 7 percent. Reaffirming India’s position as the fastest-growing major economy for the fourth consecutive year, Chief Economic Advisor Dr. Anantha Nageswaran described the country as an “oasis of macroeconomic stability” in a turbulent global environment. He pointed to strong domestic demand, moderate inflation, and robust macroeconomic buffers, even as the world grapples with geopolitical tensions and increasing trade fragmentation. All eyes are now on the Union Budget, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already signalled a mix of continuity and bold reforms. Speaking to the media ahead of the Budget Session, the Prime Minister said the identity of his government has been built on “Reform, Perform, and Transform.” He noted that India is moving ahead at speed on the “Reform Express,” with every decision guided by a human-centric approach. He also emphasised that the country is shifting focus from long-pending problems to long-term solutions that ensure predictability and strengthen global trust. So, as India looks to sustain this strong growth momentum, what forward-looking policy measures and structural reforms can we expect in the Union Budget 2026–27? And how do the recommendations and assessments in the Economic Survey shape the government’s roadmap ahead?
