In just under four years since the launch of the India Semiconductor Mission in 2021, the country has moved from vision to reality- producing its very first set of Made-in-India chips. At Semicon India 2025 in Delhi, Union Minister for Electronics & IT Ashwini Vaishnaw presented the Vikram 32-bit processor to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a historic milestone. The Prime Minister called semiconductors India’s ‘digital diamonds’ – tiny chips with the power to accelerate global progress – and expressed confidence that India’s smallest chip will soon drive the world’s biggest change. He emphasized that this achievement is not about one product or one vertical, but about building a comprehensive ecosystem of design, manufacturing, packaging, and advanced devices within the country. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw echoed this, noting that despite global uncertainties, India has emerged as a lighthouse of stability and growth, with the mission of becoming a true product nation and a competitive hub for the entire semiconductor value chain. To reflect on this milestone, the remarkable progress made in such a short time, and the road ahead for India’s semiconductor journey.
