150 years ago, a song was born…not as a melody, not as a slogan, but as a mantra – a cry that stirred the soul of a nation fighting for its freedom. Vande Mataram Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s immortal composition did not just echo across villages and cities, it echoed across the bars of prison cells, across the gallows where revolutionaries kissed the noose, across the hearts of millions who marched for India’s freedom. Today, the Lok Sabha marked the 150th anniversary of our national songwith Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiating a special discussion in the House calling it a matter of pride to be witnessing the historic occasion of ‘Vande Mataram’ completing 150 years. While noting that Vande Mataram stood like a rock and inspired unity despite British oppression, the Prime Minister reminded Parliament that when Vande Mataram completed 100 years, India was in chains again under the Emergency. Members cutting across party lines participated in the discussion, emphasizing how Vande Mataram evolved from poetry into a national call for awakening and how it continues to define the idea of nationalism in India. As we celebrate 150 years of the song that stands as a lasting emblem of India’s national identity and collective spirit, the question is how do we also ensure that the emotion, the spirit, the cultural confidence of Vande Mataram continues to live in the hearts of young Indians?. How do we pass on not just the rhythm of the song, but the values it stands for, unity, sacrifice, pride in our civilisation, and love for the motherland, to our future generations? And perhaps, more importantly in the India of 2047 and beyond, how do we ensure that Vande Mataram remains a source of inspiration, not just memory?
