“When justice is accessible to all, delivered in a timely manner, and reaches every individual regardless of their social or financial background that is when it truly becomes the foundation of social justice.” This was the emphasis of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the recently held National Conference on “Strengthening Legal Aid Delivery Mechanisms.” Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister underlined that over the past eleven years, the government has consistently worked to enhance Ease of Doing Business and Ease of Living highlighting that more than 40,000 unnecessary compliances for businesses have been removed. Through the Jan Vishwas Act, over 3,400 legal provisions have been decriminalized, and more than 1,500 obsolete laws have been repealed. The Prime Minister also used the occasion to highlight the importance of legal awareness, observing that a poor individual cannot truly access justice until they are aware of their rights, understand the law, and overcome the fear of the system’s complexity. He affirmed that enhancing legal awareness among vulnerable groups, women, and the elderly remains a key priority. Further, the Prime Minister stressed another important aspect of legal aid that justice must be delivered in a language understood by the recipient. He said this principle must guide the drafting of laws, as when people comprehend the law in their own language, it leads to better compliance and reduced litigation. With a focus on these key aspects highlighted by the Prime Minister the need to strengthen legal aid, promote legal awareness, and ensure Ease of Justice for citizens, we now turn to discuss the steps taken in recent years and the way forward.
