The ocean is fundamental to life on Earth. Covering three-quarters of the Earth’s surface, containing 97% of the Earth’s water, representing 99% of the living space on the planet by volume – the ocean is an important source of our planet’s biodiversity, plays a vital role in the climate system and water cycle, provides a range of ecosystem services, supplies us with oxygen to breathe, contributes to food security, nutrition, jobs and livelihoods, acts as a sink and reservoir of greenhouse gases, provides a means for maritime transportation, including for global trade, forms an important part of our natural and cultural heritage and plays an essential role in sustainable development. That’s how intrinsic the ocean is for our life and our future. But despite this, our oceans are facing unprecedented threats. Rising temperatures from climate change are causing record heat waves in the seas, damaging marine life. Pollution, overfishing, and loss of biodiversity are pushing many ecosystems to the edge of collapse. That’s why more than 150 countries — including India — have come together in Nice, France, for the 3rd UN Conference on Oceans.World leaders, scientists, and communities are deliberating on ways to tackle these urgent threats and map out a path to save our blue planet.We’re going to talk about the key issues of discussion at the 2025 UN. Ocean Conference and what countries can do collectively to address the challenges concerning the oceans. We’ll also talk about India’s commitment towards a resilient blue economy and how we’re progressing towards it.
