Perspective: Strengthening Women’s Voice in Lawmaking | 17 April, 2026

Sansad Tv

Our focus remains on a landmark step aimed at strengthening women’s voice in India’s higher legislative bodies. On the opening day of the special session convened to deliberate on fast-tracking women’s reservation in Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies, members cutting across party lines participated in a wide-ranging and substantive discussion—reflecting both the urgency and the significance of the moment. Taking part in the debate on The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, which seeks to amend the existing framework to operationalise women’s reservation ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored that the legislation must rise above political considerations and be seen as a national commitment to inclusive and representative governance. He described the passage of the Bill as a collective victory—one that would mark a defining milestone in empowering women and further strengthening the foundations of India’s democracy. The Prime Minister also sought to allay concerns, assuring that the proposed framework would not discriminate against any group and would remain fair and balanced in its implementation. With that strong message from the Prime Minister and a broad political consensus on enhancing women’s reservation, the focus now shifts to how this legislation will shape the future of women’s leadership in India’s democratic institutions.
