A historic sitting of Parliament is about to convene—one that could mark a decisive step towards giving women their rightful place in India’s democratic institutions. Over three days, from April 16 to 18, Parliament will discuss and pass the legislation that aims to advance women’s reservation in legislative bodies. Women constitute nearly half of India’s population, and their contribution to nation-building is immense. From science and technology to entrepreneurship, from sports to the armed forces, and from music to the arts—women today are not just breaking barriers, they are leading from the front.Yet, their representation in politics and legislative institutions has not kept pace with their growing role in society. There is now a clear and urgent push to change that. The objective is clear – that by the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, and in the Assembly elections across states, women’s reservation becomes a reality on the ground. In a recent article, the Prime Minister underlined that while successive governments made efforts – through committees and draft Bills – these initiatives never translated into action. However, what remained constant was a broad national consensus: that women’s representation in legislatures must increase. That consensus found expression in September 2023, when Parliament passed the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. Now comes the moment of implementation. Calling for collective action, the Prime Minister has urged all political parties to rise above differences, seize this opportunity, and act with responsibility – upholding the highest traditions of democracy. So as the countdown begins for the special session of Parliament, we take the opportunity to have a conversation on the significance and timeliness of this move… how transformative and empowering it can be in enhancing women’s role in lawmaking, and most importantly in shaping the vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
