A major overhaul of India’s sports governance framework is now on the table. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya introduced the National Sports Governance Bill 2025 in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday — a landmark legislation that seeks to transform the way sports bodies function, how athletes are treated, and how sports governance is structured in the country. From bringing transparency, to putting athletes at the heart of decision-making, from mandating women’s leadership roles to establishing a National Sports Tribunal, and from framing governance norms to bringing sports federations under the RTI Act — the Bill promises to clean up the system, ensure welfare of athletes and speed up resolution of sports-related disputes. The government says this is a bold attempt to integrate structural reform, legal clarity, gender equality, athlete empowerment and public accountability — laying the groundwork for a sports ecosystem that is modern, ethical, and globally competitive. So, is this the beginning of a new sporting era for India? Can this reform push to truly empower athletes and make Indian sport world-class?
