Perspective: India’s EV Surge | 22 May, 2025

Sansad Tv

India has maintained its position as the world’s largest market for electric three-wheelers for the second year in a row. According to the latest Global EV Outlook 2025 report by the International Energy Agency, sales of electric three-wheelers in India surged nearly 20%, reaching around 7 lakh units in 2024. Interestingly, this growth comes even as the global three-wheeler market contracted by 5%. Yet, electric variants bucked the trend —with worldwide sales rising over 10% to cross 1 million units, largely driven by India. India first overtook China in 2023 to claim the top spot, and has held on to that lead. More broadly, electric vehicle adoption in India is picking up pace. EV registrations touched nearly 2 million units in FY25, up 17% from the previous year. Electric passenger vehicles (cars and SUVs) also crossed a major milestone, registering over 1 lakh units, with a strong 18.2% year-on-year growth. EVs now account for nearly 3% of the overall passenger vehicle market.

And when it comes to electric three-wheelers, registrations rose 11% year-on-year, reaching close to 700,000 units in FY25. So, what’s powering this much-needed momentum in electric vehicle adoption? And what’s helping India position itself as a global manufacturing hub for e-vehicles?
