India and the Philippines have elevated their bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership. The announcement was made on 5th August, following bilateral talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of the Philippines, Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. The Philippine President is on a five-day state visit to India, accompanied by First Lady Louise Marcos and a high-level delegation, including cabinet ministers and business leaders. On Tuesday, he was accorded a ceremonial reception at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. He also paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat. Wide-ranging talks between PM Modi and the visiting dignitary were held at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi. Both leaders took stock of the progress in bilateral relations across all domains including trade, defence, maritime cooperation, healthcare, security, food security, development partnership, and people-to-people ties. The two sides signed 13 agreements and MoUs, which included finalisation of terms of reference for cooperation between the three wings of our armed forces. PM Modi also expressed support for freedom of navigation in the Indo-Pacific in line with the international laws. Celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and the Philippines, President Marcos and PM Modi also jointly unveiled commemorative Postal Stamps, themed on National Flowers of India & Philippines. In Perspective today, we’ll talk about the significance of the upgradation in India-Philippines ties, the five-year action plan that will take forward the strategic partnership and some key agreements that both sides signed during President Marcos’ state visit to India.
