Perspective: Germany’s National Election | 25 February, 2025

Sansad Tv

Today we’re going to talk about Germany where mainstream conservative parties – Christian Democratic Union (CDU) led by Friedrich Merz and its sister party Christian Social Union (CSU) have won the national election. The CDU/CSU bloc has won 28.6% of the votes, followed by 20.8% for the far-right Alternative for Germany. Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats finished third with 16.4%,the party’s worst result since World War II. The incumbent chancellor conceded defeat, terming it a “bitter election result.” The neoliberal Free Democratic Party (FDP), whose withdrawal from the coalition triggered the snap election, also suffered heavy losses. However, while the CDU/CSU bloc have won the largest share of votes, they don’t hold an absolute majority. They will need to enter a coalition with another party to secure a majority and form the next government. What could be the possible coalition outcomes? What are the challenges that await the next German Chancellor – Freidrich Merz? What will be his key priorities towards restoring Germany’s leadership in Europe?
