After concluding a first round of talks in Oman over Tehran’s nuclear programme, Iran and the US are looking ahead towards a second round of discussions, likely to be held in Rome. Both countries had described the first meeting as ‘constructive’, with the United States hailing the direct communication as being key to striking a possible deal. It was the highest-level engagement between the two nations since 2018, when President Donald Trump pulled the U.S. out of the 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and the world powers, during his first term in office. How significant are these direct discussions in establishing a deal between both sides – one that each side will be willing to accept?
