The financial viability of many countries is threatened by unsustainable debt levels, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, calling upon the G20 to focus on the world’s most vulnerable citizens. Addressing the G20 finance ministers and central governors at the first ministerial meeting under India’s G20 presidency, the Prime Minister enumerated the recent challenges to the global economy – the after-effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, rising geopolitical tensions, disruptions in global supply chains, food and energy security, unsustainable debt levels and the erosion of trust in international financial institutions due to their inability to reform quickly. Amid these challenges, the Prime Minister pointed out that it is now imperative for the Group of 20 nations to provide stability, confidence and growth to the global economy. It’s not an easy task, the Prime Minister acknowledged – but he did express hope that G20 will draw inspiration from the vibrancy of the Indian economy.
