After a productive participation at the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Brasilia on Tuesday for a historic state visit — the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Brazil in nearly six decades. He was warmly received at the airport by Brazil’s Defence Minister and welcomed with a vibrant Samba Reggae performance — a traditional Brazilian cultural expression. The Prime Minister also received an enthusiastic reception from members of the Indian diaspora, who gathered in large numbers to greet him. Touched by their affection, PM Modi called it a memorable welcome and lauded the community for maintaining strong ties with their Indian roots. During his stay in Brasilia, the Prime Minister will hold bilateral talks with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, with a focus on deepening the Strategic Partnership between the two countries in key areas of mutual interest. A set of agreements is also expected to be signed. In this edition of Perspective, we’ll unpack the key takeaways from PM Modi’s engagements – from the BRICS Summit in Rio to the bilateral leg in Brasilia – and explore how this visit could open a new chapter in India’s partnership with Brazil and the wider Global South.
