In this episode of the Perspective Prog. based on Agnipath Scheme for Armed Forces’. Amid widespread protests and incidents of arson and violence across different cities against the Agneepath scheme – the new military recruitment model announced earlier this week – Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held a meeting with the top brass of the Army, Navy and the Air Force on Saturday. It is learnt that the focus of the meeting was to address the misinformation about the scheme, find ways to pacify the agitators and ensure its quick rollout. The three services have already announced the start of the enrolment process under the new model by next week. In a bid to address a major concern over age, the government has increased the upper age limit for recruitment under the Agnipath scheme to 23 years from 21 for the year 2022. It’s also been announced that the personnel to be recruited under the scheme will be given priority in the selection for various jobs by state governments, private industries, public sector undertakings and paramilitary forces after completion of their four-year tenure. Why then are the protests flaring up? What is it that the youth are concerned about? What is the objective behind bringing such a recruitment model?
