Perspective: India-Vietnam Defence Cooperation | 19 May, 2026

Today, we focus on the deepening defence partnership between India and Vietnam following Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s bilateral meeting with Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, General Phan Van Giang, in Hanoi on Tuesday, 19th May 2026. The two leaders reviewed the growing defence ties between the two countries and discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation in areas such as maritime security, defence industry, military training and regional stability. They also exchanged views on regional and global security developments of mutual interest, while underlining the importance of peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation in the Indo-Pacific region. The discussions covered expanding collaboration in military training, defence industry partnerships, maritime security, capacity building, cyber security, United Nations peacekeeping and high-level exchanges. Both sides agreed to further enhance engagement between their armed forces through regular dialogues, joint exercises and exchange programmes. During the meeting, Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening its Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Vietnam and reiterated India’s support for Vietnam’s defence modernisation and capacity enhancement efforts. General Phan Van Giang, in turn, appreciated India’s continued support and highlighted the enduring friendship and growing strategic convergence between the two countries. In Perspective today, we will take a closer look at the expanding India-Vietnam defence cooperation and examine its wider strategic and regional significance in the Indo-Pacific.
