Perspective: India's 1st 5G Testbed | 18 May, 2022

On the show today we will talk about India’s first 5G testbed, which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday. Developed as a multi-institute collaborative project by eight institutes led by IIT Madras, the indigenous testbed has been set up at a cost of around Rs 220 crore. Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed it as an important step for self-reliance in the direction of critical and modern technologies. He also announced that India is targeting the rollout of a 6G telecom network, which will provide ultra-high-speed internet connectivity, by the end of the decade. India currently has 3G and 4G telecom networks and companies are gearing up to launch 5G.The 5G network rollout will add $450 billion to the Indian economy, as per the Prime Minister. What kind of transformation will the 5G network bring about in terms of development? What kind of a positive change will we get to see with the 5G rollout in the near future and going forth in the next decade or so with the 6G technology? Also, how significant is the testbed facility? How will it enable transition to the latest technology? These are some aspects we will try and discuss with experts who’re joining us on the programme.
