In this episode of the Perspective Prog. based on the ‘Battleground UP’. Two days before Uttar Pradesh goes to polls in the first phase, the two key contenders – the Bhartiya Janata Party and the Samajwadi Party – released their manifestoes on Tuesday. The BJP’s Lok Kalyan Sankalp Patra was released by Home Minister Amit Shah and incumbent Chief Minister Yogi Aditynath, while Samajwadi Party president released the Samajwadi Vachan Patra. Both parties have made promises to farmers ahead of elections. The BJP has announced (1)free electricity for farmers for agriculture in the next five years… (2)Rs 25,000 crore ‘Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Agri-Infrastructure Mission’ to set up cold chain centres, godowns, and processing units across the state…(3) Formulation of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for wheat and rice….(4.) 5000 crore rupees to be spent on modernisation of sugarcane mills… Also payment to sugarcane farmers within 14 days and, in case of delay, payment to be done with interest. And, (5) As many as 6 ‘Mega Food Parks’ to be developed in the state. On the other hand, the Samajwadi Party has promised that in four years, i.e. by 2025, all farmers will be made ‘debt free’. MSP for all crops will be given and sugarcane farmers will get payments in 15 days. Besides, the party will provide all farmers free power for irrigation, interest-free loan, insurance, and also pension arrangments, if voted to power. In addition to farmers, both parties have also announced welfare schemes, free education for girls and employment opportunities in state govt organisations over the next five years. How much of an impact will these promises make on elections in the politically-significant state of Uttar Pradesh? Who will the people of UP vote for this time? Will the BJP be able to maintain its dominance on the Western Uttar Pradesh Assembly seats or will the SP-RLD alliance challenge its hegemony?
