Nirmal Verma, celebrated Hindi writer and novelist, is best known for his evocative short stories and his pioneering role in the ‘Nai Kahani’ movement in Hindi literature. His breakthrough story Parinde (Birds), published in 1959, marked a new direction in narrative style and emotional depth. Born on April 3, 1929, in Shimla, Verma began writing in the early 1950s, after completing a Master’s in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University.

His literary journey took him from Delhi to Prague, where he spent a decade translating modern Czech literature into Hindi and penned his iconic novel Ve Din (Those Days), based on his student experiences in Europe. His travels across the continent inspired a series of acclaimed travelogues, including Cheeron Par Chandni and Har Barish Mein.

Nirmal Verma’s legacy includes not only timeless stories like Andhere Mein, Dedh Inch Upar, and Kavve Aur Kala Pani, but also his contribution to literature through teaching and institutional leadership roles in Bhopal and Shimla.

This conversation features Vineet Gill, senior editor at Penguin Random House India and author of Here and Hereafter: Nirmal Verma’s Life in Literature (Penguin, 2022). A trained engineer turned literary critic, Gill brings fresh insight into Verma’s life, legacy, and the enduring relevance of his work.
