On the show today, we’re going to talk about Dementia – a syndrome that leads to the loss of cognitive functioning – like thinking, remembering, and reasoning – to such an extent that it interferes with a person’s daily life and activities. As per WHO data, around 55 million people have dementia worldwide, with over 60% living in low- and middle-income countries. And as the proportion of older people in the population is increasing in nearly every country, this number is expected to rise to 78 million in 2030 and 139 million in 2050. It is the seventh leading cause of death among all diseases and one of the major causes of disability and dependency among older people globally. So what causes dementia? What are some of its common forms? How can it be diagnosed? Can it be treated? And most importantly, how can it be prevented?
