India and Cyprus have decided to elevate their relationship to a Strategic Partnership – a significant step that reflects growing convergence between the two countries. The announcement came after delegation-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides in New Delhi on Friday. President Christodoulides is on a four-day State Visit to India till the 23rd of May – a visit being seen as an important milestone in strengthening ties between the two nations. The discussions between the two leaders were comprehensive and future-focused – covering trade and investment, defence and security cooperation, maritime and financial connectivity, technology and innovation, mobility, education, culture, as well as India-European Union engagement. The two sides also exchanged views on key regional and global developments. Importantly, both leaders strongly reiterated their commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including cross-border terrorism –  underlining a shared approach towards security and stability. Several agreements were also exchanged in the presence of the two leaders — spanning counter-terrorism cooperation, maritime security, diplomatic training, innovation, education and cultural exchanges among others. In all, fourteen outcomes have emerged from this visit — signalling clear intent from both sides to deepen and diversify the partnership. So what does this Strategic Partnership really mean for India and Cyprus? How important is Cyprus for India’s engagement with Europe and the Mediterranean region? And what opportunities could emerge in trade, connectivity, security and investment going forward?
