Six years ago, as the world grappled with the unprecedented shock of the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a clarion call for Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan, announcing a special economic package of ₹20 lakh crore — nearly 10 percent of India’s GDP – to strengthen India’s fight against the unprecedented crisis. With the vision of building a stronger, more self-reliant India, the Prime Minister laid out the five pillars of Atmanirbhar Bharat – Economy, Infrastructure, System, Vibrant Demography and Demand. Over the last six years, that vision has translated into structural reforms, rapid infrastructure expansion and a renewed push for domestic manufacturing and innovation, driving transformation across key sectors of the economy. In his Independence Day address in 2025, Prime Minister Modi once again underlined Atmanirbhar Bharat as a key foundation for the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. Referring to advances in defence, technology, energy, space and manufacturing, he described self-reliance as central to India’s strength, strategic autonomy and global standing. Citing Operation Sindoor as an example of India’s growing indigenous defence capabilities, the Prime Minister said self-reliance is not just an economic goal, but the bedrock of a strong and developed India. So, six years on, how far has the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission progressed? What impact has it had across sectors? And how critical is self-reliance to India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation by 2047?
