Perspective: Railway: Tracks to Transformation | 24 April, 2026

Sansad Tv

On the show today, we focus on a major transformation which is underway in the Indian Railways – one that is reshaping not just how trains run, but how the entire network performs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spotlighted this shift, sharing an article by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on how track modernisation is powering a faster, safer and far more dependable railway system. In the article, the Railway Minister has highlighted that more than 25,000 trains run across India every day. They carry more than 2 crore passengers every single day, and also move large quantities of coal, iron ore, grains, steel, cement and other commodities across a network of over 1,37,000 km of tracks. At that scale, even the smallest flaw can lead to delays and disruptions. But what we are witnessing today is a decisive shift – from reactive maintenance to predictive, technology-driven management. Here are some impressive stats to show the scale of transformation, which the minister highlighted in his article. He said: In the last decade alone, over 55,000 kilometres of tracks have been renewed. Around 44,000 track km of long rail panels (260 m each) have been laid. Over 80,000 track km of stronger 60-kg rails are now in use Ultrasonic Flaw Detection (USFD) testing has been carried out across about 36.2 lakh track km and 2.25 crore welds The track machine fleet has doubled from 748 in 2014 to 1,785 in 2026.  About 17,500 km of safety fencing has been installed, especially where trains run above 110 kmph. At points and crossings, 36,000 thick-web switches and 7,500 weldable CMS crossings have been provided. Track supporting 130 kmph and above has grown from 6 per cent to nearly 23 per cent. Track fit for 110 kmph and above has risen from about 40 per cent to 80 per cent. So, what does this transformation really mean for passengers, for freight movement, and for India’s economic momentum? And what lies ahead for the Indian Railways?
