Space may seem vast and infinite – but it is becoming increasingly crowded and cluttered.
According to the European Space Agency, nearly 40,000 objects are currently being tracked in orbit, including about 11,000 active satellites. But beyond what we can track lies a far greater concern – over 1.2 million pieces of debris larger than one centimetre, each capable of causing serious damage.
Against this global backdrop, India’s footprint remains measured – with 129 trackable debris objects originating from its space missions. But more importantly, India’s response is gaining momentum.
In Parliament this week, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted a series of proactive steps – aligning India’s debris mitigation policies with global guidelines, and setting an ambitious vision through the Debris Free Space Mission, which aims for zero debris creation by 2030 across both government and private players.
India is also strengthening international cooperation – with agencies like NASA, European Space Agency and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency to address challenges posed by space debris.
Further, studies are being undertaken for robotic arm, rendezvous and proximity operations that serve as precursors to active debris removal.
