In the first week of February this year the Twitter space was abuzz with strong reactions over a post from the “HyundaiPakistanOfficial” Twitter handle in support of Pakistan-sponsored “Kashmir Solidarity Day”. While the initial response from Hyundai Motors India termed it as unsolicited social media post, later the company got these posts deleted and promised there would be processes to prevent any future recurrence. Meanwhile the ambassador of South Korean which is the home of Hyundai Motors was called in by the Ministry of External Affairs and strong displeasure of the government on the unacceptable social media post was conveyed to him. MEA’s statement also pointed out that while India welcomed investments by foreign companies in various sectors, it is also expected that such companies or their affiliates will refrain from false and misleading comments on matters of sovereignty and territorial integrity. Similar offensive tweets had also emanated from the Pakistani subsidiaries of several multinational companies. Later all of them except the Chinese companies deleted those posts and some including KFC, Pizza Hut, KIA Motors and Suzuki Motors issues clarification and expressed regret over the social media posts.
