Perspective: 75 Years of India’s constitution | 26 November, 2024

26th November, 2024 marked 75 years of the adoption of the Indian Constitution. It was on this day in 1949 that the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution after nearly three years of deliberations by some of the greatest minds, and which came into effect on January 26, 1950.

To commemorate the milestone journey, a commemorative event was held in the Central Hall of what is now the Samvidhaan Sadan. President Droupadi Murmu graced the event, reminding citizens that 75 years ago, in this very Central Hall, the Constituent Assembly accomplished the huge task of framing the Constitution for a newly independent country.

Asserting that our Constitution is the strong foundation stone of our democratic republic, the President said it ensures our collective and individual dignity.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar referred to the opening words of the Constitution- “We the people of India”, saying these words carry deep meaning, establishing citizens as the ultimate authority, and the Parliament serving as their voice.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla highlighted the features of the Constitution, adding that the values enumerated in the document have strengthened the reputation of India around the world.

He lauded the socio-economic changes brought into people’s lives through the functions of the Parliament over the last 75 years, strengthening their belief in democracy.

The legacy of the Indian Constitution in shaping our destiny and the ideals that provide strength to our vision to become a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
