For the last eighteen hundred years, Indian arts have been classified in terms of the nine rasas. The Tenth Rasa: An Anthology of Indian Nonsense celebrates what Sukumar Ray called the ‘spirit of whimsy’, or the tenth rasa—the topsy-turvy, irreverent and melodic nonsense literature. This fabulous selection of poetry and prose, brilliantly translated from seventeen Indian languages, includes works by Rabindranath Tagore, Gulzar, Navakanta Barua and Vaikom Mohammad Basheer, among others. Some known, others lesser-known and previously unpublished. In forms as varied as stories and songs for children, lullabies, folk tales, Bollywood songs and medieval court verse, the book opens doors to wildly imaginative worlds populated by peculiar characters and fantastical creatures, where only nonsense makes perfect sense.

Prof Sumanyu Satpathy is an eminent scholar, translator and literary historian. He has taught at the University of Delhi and NEHU. He has been a Fellow at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla; and Distinguished Fellow at the Michael J Osborne Institute of Advanced Studies, La Trobe University.  He has published several books and articles on modernism, queer theory, literary nonsense, and Indian literature, especially Odia literary culture.   Among his most recent publications are, Will to Argue ; Southern Postcolonialisms; Reading Literary Culture: Perspectives on Odisha; and Modernity, Print and Sahitya.

Presented by Dr. Gautam Choubey, ‘Likhawat’ is a show about the books of Bharat – written in many languages, published in different parts of the country, yet rooted in the singularity of Indian ethos. Each episode of Likhawat will take up a book of national resonance and will feature a special guest who is privy to the intimate story of the book as it was imagined, written, published and read.
