Perspective: Uttarakhand Flash Floods | 08 August, 2025

Sansad Tv

Days after two cloudbursts in Dharali and Sukhi Top in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district caused widespread destruction, the Indian Space Research Organisation has released satellite images capturing the devastation around Dharali village. Using Cartosat-2S, ISRO compared images from June 13, 2024, and August 7, 2025. The latest imagery reveals a vast, fan-shaped debris field — nearly 20 hectares — at the confluence of the Kheer Gad stream and the Bhagirathi River, likely burying much of Dharali under mud and rubble. The flood has dramatically reshaped the region’s topography — widening river channels, altering their course, and erasing structures from the landscape. Rescue operations continue on a war footing, but damaged roads and earlier bad weather are hampering efforts. As we await the safe return of the stranded and missing, this disaster once again raises urgent questions about the growing vulnerability of Himalayan settlements — and how such tragedies can be prevented.
