The morning of 26 June 1975, India woke up to the Emergency imposed at midnight by the then Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi. For the first time an Indian government suspended civil rights of citizens, censored the freedom of the press, arrested students, academicians, writers, journalists as well as anyone who opposed the government. It was the beginning of the darkest political period in India that lasted for 21 months.
