Discussion focuses on the century-long journey of the Public Accounts Committee. The PAC is the oldest parliamentary committee in the Indian legislative realm and has been crucial in upholding the principle of accountability as it exercises oversight of public expenditure. The Committee on Public Accounts was first set up in 1921. It underwent a radical change with the coming into force of the Constitution of India on 26 January, 1950, when the Committee became a Parliamentary Committee. Till 1966-67, a senior member of the ruling party used to be the Chairman of the Committee. However, in 1967, for the first time, a member from the Opposition in Lok Sabha, became the Chairman of the Committee. This practice continues till date. President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the centennial year celebrations of the Public Accounts Committee in the Central Hall of Parliament…..Vice president M Venkaiah Naidu, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and PAC Chairman also addressed the gathering on the occasion. while speaker Om Birla gave the valedictory address.
