The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty established for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands, acknowledging their critical ecological value. It was signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971 and came into effect in 1975. India became a signatory to the convention on February 1, 1982.
Since then, India has actively identified and designated wetlands as Ramsar sites, demonstrating its commitment to protecting these vital ecosystems. These sites encompass a diverse range of habitats, including freshwater lakes, swamps, mangroves, and high-altitude wetlands. They play a crucial role in supporting biodiversity, purifying water, controlling floods, and regulating the climate.
As of 2025, India has 91 wetlands designated as Ramsar sites—wetlands of international importance. This places India at the top in South Asia and third globally in terms of the number of Ramsar sites. These sites are not only ecologically significant but also provide essential ecosystem services and support a wide array of plant and animal species.
Join us as, we take a look at the origins of the Ramsar Convention and explore prominent Ramsar sites across India.
