In this episode of the Perspective Prog. Based on ‘NCERT Textbooks: Balanced Perspective’. Last week Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports submitted the action taken report on the Reforms in Content and Design of School Text Books. According to the report tabled in Parliament, the committee has been informed that the NCERT has taken note of all the issues raised by it and will contribute adequately to bringing in a balanced perspective of all the gender in the National Curriculum Framework, syllabus and all the textbooks which will be developed as a follow-up of NCFs. Report also says that the process of development of NCFs has already been initiated by the NCERT. The Parliamentary panel had earlier recommended that textbooks should have greater portrayal of women in new and emerging professions as role models with a focus on their contributions and pathway of achieving the same. The committee had also recommended that inputs from experts from multiple disciplines should be sought during the process of creation of content for textbooks to ensure balance and diversity of views. It should also be ensured that books are free of biases and they should instill commitment to values enshrined in the Constitution and should further promote national integration and unity.
